Episode 3, Voice
PUBLICS Youth Advisory Board is a collaborative position for 18-21 year olds who implement, question and expand the activities of PUBLICS, a contemporary art organisation based in Vallila, Helsinki.
Board members Vitória Freitas, Aliina Kemppainen, Stella Massa, and Emmi Surwillo present how they have worked with sound and voice during the last year.
Stella reminds us the importance of sharing the platforms we have access to with those who are being silenced and discriminated against. Emmi notices that sound is an exciting medium to work with to explore language and meaning with freedom and directness.
Aliina and Vitória share that recognising our responsibility to one another and to our audiences has been part of the process of becoming a collective. We can find courage and agency in working together, while being mindful of the difference between one’s personal and collective voice.
In the podcast we refer to Sandra Nuut and Ott Kagovere’s project Dear Friend (2019-22), to the spoken-words workshop led by Tania Nathan in May 2023, and to meeting Mihkkal Robertabártni Hætta who was protesting for the protection of Fosen, Sápmi from wind turbines park.
